Inducing Vomiting in Dogs With Hydrogen Peroxide: Safety Concerns

As the saying goes, "Likewise much of a adept matter tin can do more than harm than good." When your dog ingests something dangerous, you might try using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. If y'all are wondering whether it's possible to give likewise much hydrogen peroxide, the answer is both yes and no. The truth is that there are several variables that determine a safe dose of hydrogen peroxide.

Here we will discuss:

  • Caution nigh hydrogen peroxide use.
  • What it is and how information technology works.
  • What to practice if you lot requite too much.

Utilise Caution When Administering Hydrogen Peroxide to a Dog

It is essential that you consult a veterinarian before giving your dog hydrogen peroxide. At that place are many cases when it can crusade more impairment and even be fatal.

Practice NOT administrate hydrogen peroxide to dogs that:

  • accept already vomited,
  • accept trouble animate,
  • are unconscious,
  • or are having seizures.

If you are unsure, play it safe and inquire your vet or contact the ASPCA poison control number at 888-426-4435 (a $65 consultation fee applies). They should give you directions.

Which Type of Hydrogen Peroxide Should I Use on My Dog?

Hydrogen peroxide, as the name implies is simply a liquid equanimous of hydrogen and oxygen (H2Otwo). It comes in different concentrations, some of which can be potentially toxic to dogs.

Employ the three% Solution

The correct percentage to induce airsickness in dogs is the 3% solution. This means it contains 97% water and 3% hydrogen peroxide. Most household peroxide sold at stores in the brown bottle is iii%, just it doesn't hurt to double-cheque!

You may be alarmed to read on the characterization that hydrogen peroxide is toxic. Before 2d-guessing your vet's recommendation to use information technology on your dog, understand that veterinarians report that information technology is safe to use for this purpose. Co-ordinate to veterinarian Dawn Ruben, because of the fact that the internally administered hydrogen peroxide is vomited up and does non remain in the body, it is safe to use.

Note: Until recently, hydrogen peroxide was idea to exist an effective treatment for wounds. All the same, inquiry has shown that this can damage cells that are needed for healing. So if you go along hydrogen peroxide in your pet get-go aid kit, information technology should be only there to induce vomiting.

How Much Hydrogen Peroxide Should I Give My Dog?

Hydrogen peroxide is an irritant to the domestic dog'southward intestinal tract. Basically, once it is swallowed, information technology generates oxygen bubbling in the stomach. When in that location are enough bubbles, they stretch the dog'southward stomach and trigger vomiting. Usually, after airsickness, the domestic dog's stomach settles. However, if your vet advised you to make your dog vomit, consult them once again for a follow-upward on how to continue from at that place. Some dogs crave further handling.

The correct dosage to induce vomiting in dogs is one teaspoon (5 mL) per 10 pounds of body weight, co-ordinate to the pet wellness site Pet Place.

What Should I Practice After I Requite My Dog the Dose?

After you administrate the proper dose (see above), you lot should wait nigh 15 to 20 minutes to see if the dog vomits. Walking your dog and gently shaking his tummy may assist the peroxide mix with the stomach contents so those bubbles get-go working their magic.

In a normal scenario, a dog that has ingested hydrogen peroxide begins to drool, gets queasy, and and so vomits, expelling the harmful substance/object (be fast to remove information technology as some dogs will eat it again!). They should recover nicely subsequently this.

Should no vomiting occur within virtually fifteen to twenty minutes, you can safely echo the dosage only merely 1 more time, co-ordinate to veterinarian Dawn Ruben. If the 2nd dosage doesn't work within 15 minutes, information technology's time to contact your vet.

Information technology took me well-nigh one-half a mean solar day'south worth of research to find out what happens to a dog that ingests too much hydrogen peroxide. The best advice I found is to consult with your vet, for several reasons. Post-obit are some:

  1. If your dog ingested a toxin and hasn't vomited, your domestic dog needs a stronger vomiting medication, which only your vet carries. With this medication, your dog should be able to become rid of the actual toxin and the hydrogen peroxide on top of that. Remember: Timing is of the essence. You lot have but two hours to empty the contents of the stomach.
  2. If your dog ingested a higher dosage than the recommended corporeality and doesn't vomit, there are some risks of side effects. Veterinarians written report that peroxide tin can cause tummy ulcers. According to veterinary Dr. Michael Salkin, prevention of ulcerative gastritis can be instituted by giving the dog an H2 blocker antacid such equally famotidine for dogs (better known as Pepcid Ac). Owners should monitor for ulcers past watching for black stools, vomiting, and languor.

Elisa, information technology depends on why you lot are giving it. There are times when inducing vomiting is not recommended as the product ingested may do more harm than good. I would call a vet emergency heart or the Pet Poisonous substance Hotline to make up one's mind whether inducing vomiting is suggested based on what your puppy ingested.

Is it okay to requite my 15 calendar month one-time Chihuahua puppy hydrogen peroxide?

Adrienne Farricelli (author) on September 14, 2019:

This is tricky. Generally, when after vomiting the food they start airsickness fluid with no food mixed in and then retching and vomiting less and less fluid, that'due south a sign they may accept successfully emptied their stomach. Nevertheless, there are several variables to consider such as how much was ingested. Does the amount vomited appear close to how much they ingested? Did you induce airsickness by 2 hours? If so, some may have already passed through the digestive tract. In these cases, information technology is best to ask your vet to play it safety, also considering that raisins can be problematic in dogs.

Hello,

Frequently, dogs will vomit multiple times, with the starting time vomiting episodes being productive and then less and less until the dog simply retches. This is the tummy'southward natural mode to endeavor to go out as much equally possible. Megan Grand. on March 25, 2018:

My dog ate part of a Hershey milk chocolate bar. (I'm thinking he ate less than 2 oz.) So I gave him x ml of peroxide to induce airsickness, but he did not vomit. Subsequently, I discovered the amount of chocolate he ate was well below the toxic level for a 40+ pound domestic dog. Now I'm concerned near the peroxide remaining in his organisation. Should I give him another dose of peroxide to try to get him to vomit, or will he be okay digesting the peroxide?

Adrienne Farricelli (writer) on February 07, 2018:

Jane, play it safe and meet your vet! The amount ingested seems like a lot. Consider that although she seems fine now, liver problems may show up 2-three days later.

Today, my 17# IG got into some nighttime chocolate squares. I figure she ingested near 4 oz. I was within the 60 minutes, and then after consulting Dr. Google, I plant some peroxide, and dribbled probably about 1 tsp into her mouth. It took well-nigh 20-25 minutes, but she vomited a HUGE corporeality of what looked, and smelled, like dark chocolate. A bit of diarrhea, and mayhap another small corporeality of vomit. She has been drinking water, and has some interest in food. It has been about an 60 minutes since she finally vomited. Are we out of the woods now? I chose to not take her to the vet, as they suggested when I called to use ipecac... I know better than that! We are traveling, so far from her usual vet. Thanks!

Bethany, the general dose of hydrogen peroxide is i teaspoon (which is 5 ml) per 10 pounds of body weight. Your dog is fifteen pounds so right dose would be one teaspoon and a half which is seven.five ml. Being that you added water and therefore diluted information technology and being that it tin can be repeated twice, information technology shouldn't be a concern. Perhaps it's one-time likewise (did it fizz?) which may explicate why information technology didn't work. Oddly, some dogs vomit later quite some fourth dimension in some cases. But always best keeping a watchful eye and consult with your vet whatsoever concerns : Here's a similar state of affairs to yours

She didn't have much chocolate simply I didn't desire to chance it. She'south about fifteen# and I gave her about 10 ml peroxide/water. Is that amount of peroxide going to injure her?

My 7kg poodle swallowed a condom so we took him to the vet and they gave him hydrogen peroxide which made him vomit it up.

Since then (12 days agone) he has been lethargic and not his usual happy self, just keeps putting himself to bed and sleeping and so he seems unwell. He hasn't lost his appetite, no airsickness and stools appear normal. Just wondering if this is normal after HP? He is 4 years old and has never been unwell to date. Thanks

Nosotros did this earlier when she got into a box of ex lax and it worked wonders thankfully .
